Placenta Encapsulation
What is it?
The placenta is the organ in the womb connecting mother and baby that supplies nourishment and blood supply to the fetus. It is also delivered from the uterus minutes after giving childbirth and often times thrown away as medical waste. There are many cultures, however, which customarily prepare all or part of the placenta to be consumed by the mother. These include the Chinese, Vietnamese, Hungarians, and Italians. In nature, all other mammals consume the placenta of their offspring.
The positive effects of Placenta Encapsulation include:
- Increases release of Oxytocin which encourages better bonding between mother and baby
- Increases milk production
- Supplies Prolactin, Oxytocin, and hPL hormones
- Reduces stress and anxiety levels
- Influences endocrine stress levels with increase in CRH, balance in Estrogen, Progesterone, and Testosterone
- Increases energy
- Boosts iron and regulates Thyroid
- Stabilizes Post-partum mood
- Improves Immune system
- Relieves pain related to childbirth and contraction of uterus
The Process
Seasons of Balance Family Acupuncture uses a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) method that has been used for centuries. The process steams, dehydrates, and grinds the placenta into a fine powder that is put into capsules for consumption by the mother.

Post Birth Placenta Care
If you aren’t able to make plans prior to your birth, you are still able to encapsulate. Here’s how to preserve your placenta post birth.
Refrigerate the placenta or pack in ice immediately after birth for up to 3 days. The hospital will usually be able to accommodate help with ice or refrigeration until discharged when you will take it home with you. The placenta should be kept in your birth suite, and not be taken for lab work.
If the placenta is unable to be prepared within 3 days, it must go into a freezer. The placenta will stay preserved in the freezer indefinitely.
